About this deal

Babies Ever After: The more efficiently equipped commune on Holy Island sees the birth of several babies unharmed by mutation, the latest of which is expected by Dan and Kim. Why did it change me? Well, I have not stopped thinking about this story since, and it gave me nightmares throughout my teenage years. Although supposedly a book for the young, there is no attempt to minimise the horrors: irradiated kids’ hair falling out in clumps; brutalised survivors scouring the ruins for people to eat; the wails of families as disabled relatives are massacred for being a burden. It also manages to weave in the mundane insecurities of being a teenager, like trying to win the affection of a loved one – making it more human, easier to empathise with, and even more of a waking nightmare. Motivating activities focusing on performance, close text analysis, language and structure, together with varied creative tasks The dark world of a nuclear fallout — a world blighted by dead crops, a poisoned atmosphere, the devastating, long-lasting horrors inflicted by post-mushroom-cloud radiation; the desperate measures people will take to survive; the ugliness and senselessness and heartlessness that some characters will show in their bid to take control of the new world — all this is what the book’s about. First up: I don’t usually mention covers of books, which change from edition to edition, but this one was particularly hideous. I feel like someone let their kid play with Photoshop for ten minutes. Small wonder YA was so unappreciated for so long…

The ending is where Brother in the Land really shines. Danny is a main character of the play. He is a fifteen year old teenager who is a resident of Skipley. He is a son of Richard and Marry Lodge. He also had a brother Ben. Danny is a round character as he does not remain the same throughout the play. There was a huge difference in his personality after the nuclear war. Foreign troops arrive by helicopter, revealing there to be survivor communities all over Europe. Believing the Swiss troops will rescue them, the camp foolishly eat many of their rations. In fact, the Swiss confiscate their weapons and disable the few vehicles they have. By now, the camp's food supplies are exhausted, forcing the people to scavenge for whatever they can find, and many are dying. Gradually, people start to leave in small groups to fend for themselves. Shortly after Branwell dies from exhaustion during the second winter after the war, Danny, Kim and Ben leave the camp and head to Holy Island, where Danny hopes they will be safe.

I've always felt an abyss-like fear open up in front of me whenever I think of nuclear war, another reviewer mentioned the equally harrowing Threads tv show shown in 1984 on the BBC which terrified me as a 14 year old, and so it proved with this book. I was gripped by the realistic description but didn't want to read on at the same time. Maureen and Mike start a conversation about Kim having some kind of relationship with Danny. They thought that Kim loved Danny but Mike said that it wasn't their age. Kim enters and says that Mike also went out with Maureen. Muareen and Mike wanted to save Danny from Kershaws Farm for their sister ( Kim ) but Kim refused. Suddenly Branwell enters and he brings Danny and Craig along as well but they are severly injured. Kim feels very bad for Danny and is sure the soldiers did that to him. Mrs Troy says that Danny saved their lives, when they went to see a Well ( a place where water is found ). The well was surrounded by Goths. Danny then Introduces Branwell. He was the one who gave shelter to Ben and Danny when the shop was being raided. He also introduced Rhodes and said he loved to kill. Everyone leaves so that Kim and Danny could get some free space. Kim asks about the situation in the farm and Danny told her how he was about to die and he was chill with that. Danny said that he was happy he was going to die because he would see his parents again and would see Kim again. Kim tries to ask Danny out but both of them cant and they get in a fight about being crabby. In the end they start to blame each other. One plus for that shortness is that the book zooms along, event after event, with little pause for reflection or for the characters to catch up. dreams. The Shadow Chorus comes in and plays a role. They act like savages (which represents the evil in the world) while Danny fights them with flowers (this is nothing to laugh about, he is doing it because it represents that he is trying to counter evil with good). In 1994, the book was reprinted with an additional, final chapter. In this revised ending, Ben still dies, but, rather than leave his account behind, Danny takes the ledger with him to Holy Island. Kim is expecting a baby, the fourth of Holy Island, with Danny being the father. If the baby survives, it will be named after Ben.
